Phil Wood Alloy & stainless steel - The best back then, and still the best!

NOS Campagnolo NR & SR BBs are getting very hard to find. Because Phil Wood was an option in the '70s, and are very well made, we heartily recommend the use of a Phil Wood BB as the last BB you may ever purchase for your bicycle. For 1977-1987 Campy NR/SR doubles we provide the 116mm asymmetric spindle and For 1958-1977 Campy NR/SR doubles we provide the 113mm asymmetric spindle. Note that 1977 cranks can be either type. You will need to look at the raised "bump" around the spindle hole on the back of the drive-side arm of a '77 crank to determine the arm type. Big bump = early spindle, small bump = late spindle. Phil prices (below) include the cupset & instructions, but no crank bolts. Sugino 15mm bolts & washers are available for an additional $9, or NOS Campagnolo 15mm bolts and washers for $15.

We also have the 119 mm asymmetrical Phil BB that fits the Campy NR/SR triples for the same prices, as well as the 111 mm symmetrical ones for vintage Campy Pista (track) single cranks (at the same prices). We also have the small Phil BB installation tools (TO-PWBB, $14.00 each, two work the best for installing the BB). Note: the cups included in the Phil Wood BBs mentioned above are stainless steel. Aluminum cups are available for an additional $10 per BB. Cups are also available separately.

Find your Crankset type and Threading/Shell Width. Remember that thick (rifled) cups provide more dirt and moisture repelling capabilities than thin ones. Also, G.S. spindles, while excellent, are not as spiffy as top-end ones. Triples always used the thin cups.

For Italian double 'ring BB spindles, add 1 mm to BSC/French lengths. Record ("NR") and SR all use the same arms at any given time in history. An SR crankset only has different chainrings than Record. Otherwise, they are identical. BBs are not!! There are four types: GS, Record, Nuovo Record, and Super Record (Ti spindle, Alu cups).

Use of pre-78 cranks on post-77 spindles will result in cranks sitting 1.5 millimeters too far outboard. If crank arm tapers are well used, this may actually not be so bad at all!

Use of pre-78 spindles on post-77 cranks will usually result in the crank hitting the chainstays - not acceptable at all!

From 1958 - 1972 Record crank arms were not dated on their back side
From 1973 - 1979 the year of crank manufacture is the last digit in a diamond
From 1980 - 1984 the year of crank manufacture is the last digit in a circle
"11" in a rectangle means 1985, "22" means 1986, and "33" means 1987.
